If the tub fills and washes but never kicks into a fast spin, suspect the lid switch on a top-loader or a worn clutch, belt, or motor fault on other designs. There's also a software angle: many machines refuse to spin when they sense an unbalanced or oversized load, so one bath mat can fake a breakdown. Thumping so hard it scoots across the floor

A machine that bangs through every spin — not just one overloaded comforter wash — usually has tired shock absorbers or snapped suspension rods. The violence gets worse over months, and every loud spin hammers the bearings and loosens hose connections, so the cheap fix prevents two expensive ones. Replacing the suspension as a set calms the machine down for good.
