Cooktops fail in patterns. Here are the five calls we get most, and what each one usually means.

One zone is dead, the rest cook fine

On a radiant electric top, that points to the element under the glass or the switch feeding it. On induction, suspect that zone's coil or its connection to the power board. On gas, a single cold burner is usually clogged ports or a tired spark electrode. Here's the encouraging part: one dead zone on a working cooktop is the cheapest class of cooktop failure. We test at the zone first, so you never pay board money for an element problem.

The gas flame is slow, lazy or uneven

A healthy burner catches within a couple of seconds and burns steady blue. Yellow tips, gaps in the flame ring, or a burner that hesitates before lighting point to blocked ports, a cap sitting crooked, or a weakening electrode. Boil-overs and grease cause most of it. Some of that cleans up on the spot; worn burner valves and electrodes get replaced. If you ever smell gas while the knobs are off, close the shutoff, open the windows, and call us from outside the room.

The panel won't wake up — or it's stuck locked

Look for the lock icon before assuming the worst. Nearly every glass panel has a child lock that engages with a long press, and it happily survives power flickers. If holding the unlock pad does nothing, we move to the power feed, the internal line fuse, and the main board. One more quirk worth knowing: a 240-volt circuit uses a double breaker, and half of it can trip while the other half holds. The display may light while no zone will heat.

Sparks or arcing around the edge of a zone

Retire that zone today. Arcing under the glass means a cracked element, a connection burning at its terminal, or a spill that worked down to live parts. The smell is sharp and electrical, and the glass above the spot often shows a shadow. This fault doesn't heal and doesn't stay small. It's also one of the few cooktop problems we treat as a priority booking, because the fix is routine but the risk of waiting isn't.

Touch controls ignore your finger

First, the boring causes: wet glass, a pan overhanging the control strip, or a film of cleaner residue. Dry the surface and try again. If clean, dry glass still won't respond, the touch layer or its ribbon connector has failed. On some models the touch film replaces separately; on others it's bonded to the control board and they swap as one part. We tell you which build yours is before quoting, because the price difference is real.

Our rule of thumb: a chip is a warning; a crack is a stop sign.

What can wait. Shallow scratches from sliding cast iron are cosmetic. A small chip at the outer edge, away from every cooking zone, can usually be monitored — photograph it, check it monthly, keep liquids away from that corner. The glass-ceramic in these panels handles heat beautifully; what it hates is impact and point stress.

What can't. Any crack that touches a cooking zone ends the panel's cooking career, no matter how thin the line looks. Heat cycles work the crack wider every time you cook. Spills wick through to the wiring underneath, and on induction models, to the electronics. The glass is also part of the structure that carries your pan's weight. A star-shaped impact crack — the dropped bottle, the falling can from the cabinet above — is the most common death we see, with sugar burns a distant second.

The honest economics. Replacement glass is brand-specific, sized to your exact model, and priced like it. Glass money is real money: by the time the panel and careful labor are added up, the total deserves a hard look, especially on induction units. So the number goes in writing before we order anything, and you decide with the figure in front of you. What the repair protects is everything around the glass — the cutout, the counter, and electronics that still work.

Most cooktops in local kitchens wear one of a handful of names: GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Bosch, KitchenAid and Kenmore. We carry common radiant elements and burner switches for the high-volume models, and we source induction boards and coils by part number with realistic lead times.

Each brand has its habits. GE and Frigidaire radiant tops tend to wear out zone switches before elements. Bosch induction units throw clear error codes that shorten diagnosis. Samsung and LG touch panels are sensitive to moisture creep at the edge of the glass. Knowing the habit means we often arrive with the likely part already on the truck.
